Piton de la Fournaise Volcano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Piton de la Fournaise<\/strong> volcano in Reunion island <\/strong>is a must-see site on the island. It is the most visited tourist site on Reunion Island. The Piton de la Fournaise is a Unesco World Heritage Site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most active volcanoes on the planet, Piton de la Fournaise is located in the south-east of the island. It reaches an altitude of 2630 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History: <\/em><\/strong>Reunion Island was born probably 3 million years ago thanks to the activity of the Piton des Neiges<\/strong> which emerges from the Indian Ocean<\/strong>. The only active volcano during this period, it has not been active for over 12,000 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Piton de la Fournaise<\/strong> is more recent (about 500,000 years). It worked in tandem with the Piton des Neiges<\/strong> until the latter became extinct. Piton de la Fournaise is an effusive volcano. The fluid lava flows slowly down the slopes. It is therefore much less dangerous than explosive volcanoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volcano route and Pas de Bellecombe<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The must-do is to go to the Pas de Bellecombe<\/strong> along the Volcano route. On the programme, wonderful landscapes and a magical show!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the forest road of the volcano, you will cross beautiful landscapes with changing vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once at the Pas de Bellecombe, there is a car park with a magical view of the Fouqu\u00e9 enclosure. You will see in particular the Dolomieu<\/strong> crater and the Formica L\u00e9o<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also possible to take a helicopter<\/strong> or microlight flight<\/strong> over the volcano and its magnificent landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiking on the Piton de la Fournaise<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Once at the car park, those who wish to do so can take the footpaths. Go down to the Fouqu\u00e9<\/strong> enclosure by the Rempart path (many steps to go down and then up on the way back). For the walks on the volcano, you can be satisfied with a 2-hour walk. The most courageous will go to the top of the Dolomieu<\/strong> crater (count 5-6 hours of walking to and from).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in Plaine des Cafres, before the forest road leading to Plaine des Sables <\/strong>and Pas de Bellecombe<\/strong>, the Cit\u00e9 du Volcan <\/strong>museum provides a wealth of information about the 500,000-year-old Piton de la Fournaise volcano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to get to the volcano<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Take the route des Plaines<\/strong> to Bourg-Murat<\/strong>. Then you will easily find the access to the forest road of the volcano (signs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
